You’re never too old to try a new sport, so watch out Olympics in Rio: today I learned how to wang a welly.

The event was the Welly-Wanging at the Duke of Wellington in Welbury, near Northallerton. Mike O’Carroll, the organiser, carefully showed me how to place my feet, how to grip my welly, and how to swing my arm.

 

After allowing the welly to slip out of my fingers too soon, Mike advised me of the best moment to release the welly.

 

It was a lovely way to spend a golden September afternoon. The event, explained Mike, was to celebrate the Duke of Wellington, who gave his name to the boot, and to Welbury’s village pub.
